Spectacle lens coatings
High-performance lens coatings turn plastic lenses into true all-rounders.
Whether anti-reflective, scratch-resistant or for easy cleaning – the right lens coating can help ensure exceptional vision. The coatings all come with a host of practical functions and are among the key features of a pair of glasses. But what coatings are available – and what are the benefits?
Together, we’ll choose the right solution for you depending on your needs – for instance, a coating with a blue light filter or one for greater comfort when driving.
What lens coatings are available?
Many different kinds of lens coatings are available, with different functions for greater visual comfort:
DuraVision® Platinum
DuraVision® Platinum is our premium coating: it’s the hardest lens coating ZEISS has ever produced – meaning it offers the best protection against scratches. Its anti-reflective function minimises reflections, and the lenses remain clear.
Anyone you talk to will see the exceptional anti-reflective properties of DuraVision® Platinum due to reduced reflections on both the front and back of your lenses. ZEISS DuraVision® Platinum has 50% fewer reflections** compared to an uncoated lens.
Standard AR coatings use green hues – unfortunately, this is also the colour the human eye is most sensitive to. ZEISS therefore uses blue reflections as they are less noticeable and distracting.

DuraVision® BlueProtect
Our coating for blue light protection. ZEISS DuraVision® BlueProtect reflects part of the blue-violet light coming from digital devices. This results in less transmittance in the blue light hazard spectrum (380–455 nm). It also preserves high transmittance levels of beneficial blue light (>460 nm), which helps regulate sleep cycles, ensures additional comfort and helps reduce digital eyestrain.
DuraVision® BlueProtect is therefore ideal for people who spend a lot of time using their smartphones, laptops or tablets, and are either sensitive to blue light or want to protect their eyes against blue-violet light because they’re concerned about their eye health. DuraVision® BlueProtect lenses are therefore great for the office or as digital lenses. Our EnergizeMe lenses for contact lens wearers come with this function as standard.
In addition to a blue light filter, ZEISS DuraVision® BlueProtect lenses feature a hard coating that protects against scratches and a CleanCoat finish for easy cleaning.
DuraVision® Sun
DuraVision® Sun is our specially designed coating for sunglasses and tinted lenses. Reflections on the back of sunglass lenses can be extremely annoying. You’ll often see your cheek reflectd in sunglasses without an anti-reflective coating. DuraVision Sun can withstand both water and grease, while a hard coating protects against scratches and a water-repellent CleanCoat keeps dust and dirt at bay. This ensures clear vision, durability and easy care. On the front of the lens, the coating is colour-neutral so as not to interfere with your chosen lens colour.
All coloured ZEISS lenses can also be combined with other products from the ZEISS DuraVision® family (like DuraVision® Platinum).
DuraVision® DriveSafe coating
– only available for DriveSafe lenses
ZEISS DriveSafe lenses feature an innovative coating as standard: DuraVision® DriveSafe was specially developed for people who are exposed to glare while driving.
Light emissions at night or intense light from the headlamps of oncoming cars with Xenon or LED technology can irritate our eyes and cause glare. Glare is a big risk on the road as it limits our vision and reduces our eyes’ contrast sensitivity.
That’s where DuraVision® DriveSafe comes in, generating clear vision in challenging light conditions, reducing glare at night from oncoming cars or street lights and providing a clear view of the road while driving. It does all this without making any compromises in terms of comfort: lenses with the DuraVision® DriveSafe coating are everyday lenses optimised for driving and can be worn during the day and at night. At the same time, they come with a hard coating in the familiar ZEISS quality and a CleanCoat finish for easy cleaning.

Our tip for all plastic lenses – with or without coatings.
Even if your glasses have a hard coating to protect against scratches, you should only ever clean your lenses and frames with quality lens cleaning products that won’t damage the lens. Please avoid quickly cleaning your lenses with a tissue, your tie, jumper, sleeve or whatever is to hand as you’ll transfer all the dirt onto the lenses, which can result in micro-scratches even if you have modern plastic lenses with a hard coating.
Like many things in life, the better you take care of it, the longer you can enjoy all the benefits.
Pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes from ZEISS are a great option for cleaning your lenses. They are thorough, convenient and compact. You can of course use a simple microfibre cloth, but please note that dry cloths are not always ideal, especially for removing greasy substances. It’s better to moisten the cloth first (e.g. using a lens cleaning spray).
